Happy Thursday evening to all!   Thanks to my wonderful students for their very thoughtful get well cards.  The cards did make me smile and laugh while reading them.  I do want to assure you and your children that I am not on vacation.  I'd much rather be in the classroom than dealing with my injury!!!  Thanks for all of your kinds thoughts and get well wishes.

An update on my ankle.  I am having surgery tomorrow (Friday 4/1) afternoon to stabilize my ankle.  They will be putting in a plate and two pins.  The recovery time is long but I plan only to be out of school the next two weeks.  I say only (knowing that's a long time) but in the scheme of my recovery it doesn't seem so long.  I will not be able to put any weight on my leg for at least 10 weeks (that would be the last day of school).  I will be back in the classroom when we return from spring break!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with me.  I am truly blessed!

Happy Saturday!  If you haven't heard already, I had a mishap Wednesday evening that resulted in a dislocated and fractured left ankle.  I have been taking it easy and resting since returning from the emergency room.

As a result, I am not sending home weekly reports on Monday.  I did not assign homework for this week, giving students time to finish up on their science night projects.  I can't wait to see all the projects!

Don't forget that Thursday is the end of 3rd quarter and that Friday, April 1st is a teacher workday (no school for students).

Enjoy your Sunday!

Hats for Japan

Hunter Elementary is collecting change (any denominations including checks) for the children of Japan this week.  The school will be making a donation to The American Red Cross on Friday.  Students can wear a hat to school on the day of their donation.  We welcome all types of donations.  Make checks payable to The American Red Cross.  Students are to put their donations in the jar in their homeroom!

Thank you in advance for your generous support!

Monday, March 21st

Happy 1st day of spring.  I got a text from my mom in northern New Jersey this morning that said it was snowing there!  Glad to be in Raleigh.

I did not assign Study Island for homework last week.

This is going to be a crazy week.  We are elective down.  Today (Monday) we are administering the 3rd quarter writing prompt which we are required to give each quarter.  Tomorrow 3/22 is Region Fest 9:30 - 12:30.  Students will be learning about the different regions of North Carolina by listening to a storyteller and handson activities for the 3 regions!  Thank you to Hunter Buxton for organizing Region Fest!!!  Thursday afternoon we will see the play.

Remember No School on Friday 3/25.  It's a vacation day.

Happy Monday!

Hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather over the weekend.

Reading/Writing:
We will be finishing up our folktale unit over the next two weeks.  Students will begin the writing process for a folktale on Monday.  A final copy of their original folktale is due Thursday, March 24th.  They will be completing all of the writing steps in class.

Homework:
The homework that was handed out on Friday, March 11th is due Thursday, March 17th (not the 16th as written on the packet).  All portions must be completed and on time, otherwise homework will receive an incomplete as a grade.  Students have been reminded that homework is due at the beginning of class when I collect it.  If it is not handed in at this time it is considered late and will also receive an incomplete as a grade.

Beginnning with the next homework assignment, students will be given assignments on Study Island which they will have to complete on the computer at home.  They will be given a due date and time.  Any work that is not completed and submitted by that date and TIME, will be incomplete.  Be sure to help your child plan their week with the due date and time in mind.  The assignment will not be accessible after the due date (which will be at 8 pm the evening before the packet is due).  Students who do not have access to a computer at home can complete the work during morning work or study hall (the same due date will apply).  Class time will not be provided for Study Island.

4th Grade News:
If you haven't returned your child's permission slip and $30 for the fieldtrip, please do ASAP.  We need to reserve buses and will do so based on the number of permission slips and money we have received.

Effective immediately:  any homework that is not COMPLETE  or handed in at the beginning of the class period on due date, will receive a grade of incomplete.

I've put my blog on the back burner and have decided that it would be the best way for me to keep everyone up to date.  Easier than a weekly newsletter too.  I hope to be able to scan homework too.  As you know the school's budget has been caught and making copies is a huge expense (besides the paper cost).

Odyssey of the Mind
Congratulations to Ben Balint-Kurti, Sadie Buxton, Cameron Croom, Ben Goldman, Conor Mulligan, Chip Raynor, and Rohini Sharma!  They placed 5th in the regional competition for Odyssey of the Mind on March 5th in Chapel Hill.  Way to go!!!!  They did an outstanding job!  I am so proud of their hard work!!  Go Hunter!

Reading/Writing
It's been a busy few weeks.  In language arts we are working on types of fiction (science fiction, legends, folktales/folklore, and novels.  A unit on folktales is our current focus.  The unit will end with students writing their own folktale.  A final copy of their folktale is due Thursday, March 24th.  All stages of the writing (planning, drafting, editing, revising, and final draft) will be completed in class.  All folktales must be handed in on the 24th in order to receive credit for the project.  This is the major writing assignment for the 3rd quarter

Social Studies
We are learning about the people of North Carolina in social studies.  We are studying the people of each of the three regions.

Homeroom
If you have not turned in your child's permission slip and fieldtrip money it is due tomorrow 3/8.  We need to confirm the number of seats that are needed on buses on Tuesday afternoon (the number will be figured based upon the permission slips and $30 we have received).
